Following a successful opening weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to expand into IMAX theaters across North America beginning Aug. 6, giving audiences another premium-format viewing option after initially playing without a wide domestic IMAX release. The move comes as Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey concludes its exclusive three-week run across most IMAX locations, allowing Sony Pictures’ Marvel blockbuster to secure additional premium screens while The Odyssey continues playing in all 41 IMAX 70mm venues worldwide.
The expanded IMAX rollout follows a massive theatrical debut for ‘Brand New Day,’ which is now has earned the biggest opening ever at the North American box office with a 3-day of $360M – taking the top spot from Disney/Marvel Studio’s previous domestic debut record with 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (which opened to $357.1M.) Strong demand helped the film exceed industry projections, while premium large-format screenings, including Dolby Cinema, also delivered significant box office results. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said the company expects the expanded release to fuel repeat business as audiences seek the enhanced viewing experience.
The announcement marks a notable shift from earlier expectations that Spider-Man: Brand New Day would largely miss domestic IMAX screens because of The Odyssey’s exclusive engagement. Instead, IMAX will now split its North American digital network between the two films, while preserving Nolan’s large-format 70mm presentations. The arrangement follows strong IMAX performances for Brand New Day in international markets, including China, Japan and South Korea, where the film earned an estimated $23 million through IMAX screenings before the North American expansion was confirmed.
The simultaneous success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey has helped drive one of the strongest periods in recent box office history, with IMAX reporting a record-breaking July and theaters benefiting from exceptional demand for premium-format screenings.
