A new DC-inspired drama, Lanterns, is slated to arrive on HBO Max on August 16, bringing a grounded, mystery-driven take on the Green Lantern universe.

HBO Max’s post on X reads: “Beware my power, Green Lantern’s light. #Lanterns premieres August 16 on HBO Max.”

The series centers on Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, who takes rookie John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, under his wing as they navigate the responsibilities of being Green Lanterns. Their partnership leads them to a troubling case on Earth, where a murder in a quiet American town pulls them into a deeper, more unsettling investigation. Kelly Macdonald appears as the town’s tough-minded sheriff, while Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen round out the supporting cast.

The official teaser for the series captures the tone of the show: “Beware my power, Green Lantern’s light,” hinting at both the scale and intensity of the story. Blending cosmic elements with a grounded crime narrative, the series follows “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery.”

Lanterns was co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, with Mundy also serving as showrunner. Executive producers include James Gunn, Peter Safran, Ron Schmidt, and James Hawes, who directed the opening two episodes.
