Nearly three decades after becoming a cult favorite, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” is getting a follow-up, with production officially underway on a new film starring Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino.

20th Century Studios confirmed the start of filming with a photo of the actresses in director’s chairs marked “Romy and Michele 2,” accompanied by the message, “The reunion you’ve been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.” Sorvino celebrated the announcement by writing, “It’s finally happening. Bursting with joy to be ‘reunited!’”

Released in 1997, the original film followed two friends who invented impressive careers to gain the approval of former classmates at their 10-year reunion. While it achieved only modest box office results, the comedy developed a devoted following over the years and became a pop-culture favorite. Discussion of a sequel persisted for years before gaining momentum in 2024 and being formally announced in 2025.

Kudrow and Sorvino are reprising their roles as Michele Weinberger and Romy White in the sequel, which will be directed by Tim Federle and written by Robin Schiff, who created the original screenplay. The new movie is being produced by 20th Century Studios and is set for release on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally, rather than in theaters.

Several other familiar faces from the 1997 comedy are returning, including Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell. Joining the cast are Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham, although details about their characters and the story have not been revealed.
