Sony Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for The Social Reckoning, writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2010 film The Social Network. The new film is described as a companion piece rather than a direct sequel, and revisits Zuckerberg’s story through the lens of Facebook’s growing influence and the consequences that accompanied its rise.
Jeremy Strong steps into the role of Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, with the drama focusing on the controversies that engulfed the company years later, drawing inspiration from The Wall Street Journal’s “The Facebook Files” investigation and whistleblower Frances Haugen’s disclosures.
The trailer introduces Strong as an older, embattled Zuckerberg preparing for congressional scrutiny while defending his company amid mounting criticism. In one scene, he declares, “I’m a professional defendant,” underscoring the film’s emphasis on Facebook’s battles over misinformation, political unrest and concerns about the effects of its platforms on young users. The teaser opens with the phrase, “Every revolution begins with a reckoning.”
Oscar winner Mikey Madison portrays Haugen, the former Facebook engineer who leaked internal documents in 2021, while Jeremy Allen White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, whose reporting brought many of the revelations to light. The cast also includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen and Bill Burr. Sorkin, who won an Academy Award for writing The Social Network, returns as both screenwriter and director.
