Tim Curry, the British actor whose unforgettable performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter made “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” a cult phenomenon, has died at 80. Curry died Tuesday at his Los Angeles home, according to his longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Curry rose to international prominence through the stage and film versions of “The Rocky Horror Show,” portraying the flamboyant, gender-bending scientist at the center of the musical. The 1975 movie initially struggled at the box office but eventually became a midnight-movie sensation, developing an extraordinarily devoted audience and establishing Curry as one of pop culture’s most distinctive performers.
His career extended well beyond “Rocky Horror.” Curry earned three Tony Award nominations for his Broadway work in “Amadeus,” “My Favorite Year” and “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” and won a Daytime Emmy for his voice work. On screen, he played the sinister Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s “It,” as well as roles in “Clue,” “Legend,” “Annie” and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.”
A major stroke in 2012 left Curry with impaired mobility and dependent on a wheelchair, but he continued working, particularly in voice roles and appearances connected to his longtime fan base. He returned to the big screen in the 2024 horror film “Stream” and published his memoir, “Vagabond,” in 2025. He also remained connected to “Rocky Horror,” appearing at anniversary events as the film continued to introduce new generations to its themes of individuality and self-expression.
Curry’s death prompted tributes from his former “Rocky Horror” colleagues, who remembered not only his extraordinary stage presence but also his warmth and generosity away from the spotlight. His portrayal of Frank-N-Furter, meanwhile, remains the defining performance of a career that repeatedly demonstrated his range, from theatrical villains and eccentric comic characters to dramatic and animated roles.
