The Television Academy on Wednesday announced the nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards during a morning livestream from the Wolf Theatre hosted by past winners Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller.
HBO Max’s The Pitt emerged as the year’s most-nominated program with 25 nominations, including a nod for Outstanding Drama Series and an Outstanding Lead Actor for Noah Wyle. Trailing closely in the drama field is Apple TV+’s freshman science-fiction series “Pluribus” with 18 nominations. Other major competitors vying for the top drama trophy include “The Diplomat,” “The Gilded Age,” “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” “Paradise,” “Slow Horses,” and “Your Friends & Neighbors.”
In the comedy categories, the final season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” generated 24 nominations, setting a record for the most nominations ever earned by a comedy series in a single year. The show earned a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series alongside a lead actress nomination for Jean Smart. “Hacks” faces heavy competition from FX’s “The Bear,” as well as other nominated comedies such as “Abbott Elementary,” “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” “Nobody Wants This,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Shrinking,” and “Widow’s Bay.”
The limited series race is led by the sophomore season of Netflix’s anthology “Beef” with 16 nominations, followed by the dark comedy “DTF St. Louis” with 13 nominations. Other nominees in this category include “The Beast in Me,” “All Her Fault,” and “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.”
This year’s eligibility window notable left out the breakout hit “Heated Rivalry” due to foreign financing regulations, though guest star Connor Storrie managed a comedy nomination for his hosting appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” Additionally, actor Jason Bateman picked up four nominations across multiple separate productions, while late filmmaker Rob Reiner earned a posthumous nomination for his guest appearance on “The Bear.”
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock on Monday, September 14, originating from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Veteran “Law & Order: SVU” actress Mariska Hargitay will host the gala, breaking a 15-year streak without a sole female host.
