More than a decade after their hit biker drama concluded its seven-season run, the ensemble cast of “Sons of Anarchy” is joining forces once again for a new limited series ordered by FX and set to stream on Hulu.
Titled “Legends,” the upcoming meta-thriller will star former series lead Charlie Hunnam alongside returning cast members Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. Rather than reprising their original outlaw motorcycle club characters, the performers will portray fictionalized versions of themselves in a real-world scenario reminiscent of the cult classic “Galaxy Quest”.
A post on FX Networks’ social media – which featured a screenshot of The Hollywood Reporter article revealing the news of the series – reads: “You read that correctly. Charlie Hunnam is reuniting the cast of FX’s Sons of Anarchy to portray themselves in the new limited series thriller ‘Legends.’ Coming to FX and Hulu.”
According to the official logline, “When the cast of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.” The project was co-developed by Hunnam and executive producer Jonathan Groff, who is also set to appear on screen. Additional executive producers include Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn, with FX Productions and 20th Television overseeing the production.
Network executives praised the self-referential premise brought forward by Hunnam, who previously starred as Jax Teller on the flagship series from 2008 to 2014. “When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision. Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know,” said FX Entertainment President Nick Grad.
The limited series marks a notable return to FX for Hunnam following his recent award-nominated turn in “Monster: The Ed Gein Story”. While further casting details and production timelines remain unannounced, network officials confirmed that additional actors from the original series will be added to the ensemble in the coming weeks.
