Filmmaker Zack Snyder has signed on to write and direct a new reimagining of Escape From New York, reviving John Carpenter’s influential 1981 dystopian action classic and marking the most significant progress on the long-discussed project in years.
The original Escape From New York was set in a dystopian future where Manhattan had been converted into a massive maximum-security prison. The story followed former soldier and convicted criminal Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell, who is sent into the lawless island to rescue the U.S. president after a crash landing. The film became a cult favorite and later spawned the 1996 sequel Escape From L.A..
Sources state that Snyder’s version is being described as a reimagining rather than a straightforward remake. Early details suggest the filmmaker intends to pursue a grittier approach that relies heavily on practical effects, real-world locations and large physical sets, a departure from the effects-heavy style associated with some of his recent projects.
The project is being developed by StudioCanal and The Picture Company, with producers Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman overseeing the film alongside Snyder and his Stone Quarry partners Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller. Carpenter, who directed and co-wrote the original film and retains rights to the franchise with StudioCanal, is attached as an executive producer.
No cast members have been announced, and plot specifics remain under wraps. The package is expected to be presented to studios and streaming companies in the coming weeks, with the current plan calling for a theatrical release.
