Netflix has shared the trailer for the sequel to the classic sitcom A Different World, which will premiere on Sept. 24 – marking exactly 39 years since the original series first aired on NBC in 1987.
The new series returns viewers to the fictional Hillman College, the historically Black college at the center of the original show. This time, the story follows Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, as she begins her freshman year and works to establish her own identity. Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon stars in the lead role, with several original cast members set to reprise their roles — including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell. The sequel will also introduce a new group of Hillman students while continuing the legacy of characters from the original series.
The 10-episode single-camera comedy is led by showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride. Original series creative force Debbie Allen returns as an executive producer and director, overseeing the premiere and additional episodes. Original writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood are also among the executive producers.
The original A Different World, which ran from 1987 to 1993, evolved from a spin-off of The Cosby Show into a landmark series focused on Black college life and culture. Netflix’s continuation aims to introduce Hillman College to a new generation while honoring the impact and legacy of the original program.
