Taylor Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, recognizing her work directing music videos and expanding the role of artists in visual storytelling.
CBS and MTV announced the new honor Monday, Sept. 21, stating that the award recognizes artists “whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling.”
Swift began directing on her own in 2020 with “The Man,” which earned her the VMA for Best Direction. She followed with “All Too Well: The Short Film,” which won three VMAs in 2022 — Video of the Year, Best Longform Video and Best Direction — and later earned the Grammy for Best Music Video. Her other directing credits include “cardigan,” “willow,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Lavender Haze,” “Karma,” “I Can See You,” “Fortnight,” “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite.”
The honor also adds another milestone to Swift’s VMA history. She currently shares the record for most VMA wins with Beyoncé at 30, and the new award will bring Swift’s total to 31, according to The Associated Press. Swift has also received nine competitive nominations this year, including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year, while “The Fate of Ophelia” accounts for seven nominations and “Opalite” is nominated for Best Direction.
The 2026 VMAs will be held Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and hosted by Snoop Dogg. The two-hour ceremony will air live on CBS and MTV at 7:30 p.m. ET and stream on Paramount+ in the United States. Madonna leads this year’s nominations with 11, while Nirvana is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award.
