A new authorized Gilmore Girls documentary is headed to HBO Max, giving fans an inside look at the beloved television series through never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes and original script pages.

The project, announced on HBO Max’s social media accounts, is being produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted Television and directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Bonni Cohen. While HBO Max has not announced a premiere date, the film is being developed as part of the show’s 25th anniversary celebration.

The announcement comes as a separate independent documentary, originally titled Searching for Stars Hollow and now known as Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, continues development outside Warner Bros. That fan-backed project includes interviews with several cast members but is unaffiliated with the newly announced HBO Max film.

Originally airing from 2000 to 2007, Gilmore Girls became a defining television series thanks to its fast-paced dialogue, mother-daughter relationship and small-town setting of Stars Hollow. The franchise returned in 2016 with Netflix’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, introducing the series to a new generation of viewers and helping maintain its popularity through streaming. The new HBO Max production marks the first studio-authorized documentary centered on the show’s legacy.

The documentary will feature interviews with series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, executive producer Daniel Palladino, star Lauren Graham and additional cast and crew members, offering an in-depth look at the making of the WB drama and its lasting cultural impact. The Palladinos are also serving as executive producers. Graham shared the announcement on social media, where she also revealed she is co-writing a Gilmore Girls book with Sherman-Palladino that is expected to be released in 2027.
