Sony Pictures has shared the debut trailer for its upcoming science fiction drama ‘Klara and the Sun,’ offering a first glimpse at Jenna Ortega in the titular role of a unique artificial companion. Directed by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi, the film brings to life the narrative of Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed bestselling novel.
The trailer footage provides a window into a distinct near-future society where specialized companion droids are utilized to alleviate youth isolation and bridge human emotional gaps. Ortega provides the introductory voiceover, stating, “Hello, my name is Klara, I am an Artificial Friend.” As an automated helper designed for human socialization, Klara is eventually purchased by a mother, portrayed by Amy Adams, to provide companionship for her daughter, Josie, played by newcomer Mia Tharia.
The plot hinges on Josie’s struggle with a severe, mysterious medical condition and a fragile familial dynamic, setting the stage for Klara to navigate the complexities of human grief and emotional recovery. The trailer highlights how the solar-powered android processes human behaviors with a naive, childlike perspective, prompting one skeptical character to retort, “That’s dumb,” when learning how the machine gathers knowledge from observing her owners.
The production is a collaborative effort between 3000 Pictures and Spyglass Media Group, with a screenplay co-written by Dahvi Waller and Waititi. Ishiguro serves as an executive producer on the project alongside producers David Heyman and Garrett Basch. The feature boasts an ensemble supporting cast that includes Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi, and Natasha Lyonne.
