Michael J. Fox will receive the Television Academy’s ‘Bob Hope Humanitarian Award’ during this year’s Emmy Awards, recognizing decades of leadership in Parkinson’s disease research and advocacy. Fox will be presented with the award at the Creative Arts ceremony on Sept. 6, with the recognition also featured during the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast on Sept. 14.

The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award recognizes members of the television industry whose charitable efforts reflect the late entertainer’s legacy of service and generosity. The honor, presented only six times since its creation in 2002, celebrates individuals whose philanthropic work has made a significant humanitarian impact; previous recipients include Oprah Winfrey, Danny Thomas, George Clooney, Sean Penn, and, most recently, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen. Fox previously received the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2022, making him one of the few entertainers to be honored by both the film and television academies for humanitarian achievement.

The Television Academy said Fox was selected “in recognition of his transformative contributions to Parkinson’s disease research and advocacy.” Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, the actor publicly disclosed his condition in 1998 before establishing The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000. The organization has since become the world’s largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s research, investing more than $3 billion in scientific studies, clinical trials and programs aimed at improving treatments and advancing a cure.

Fox, a five-time Emmy winner, is also nominated this year for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance on Apple TV+’s Shrinking, marking his 19th career Emmy nomination.
